Did you know that Monopoly was invented by Charles B. Darrow in 1934 during the Great Depression? When he took the game to Parker Brothers, they rejected it citing 52 fundamental flaws. Rich Uncle Pennybags was the official mascot of the game. His name was changed to Mr. Monopoly in 1998. The total amount of play money available in the Monopoly set is $ 15,140. A Monopoly fact is that the streets in the game were taken from Atlantic City in New Jersey.

Monopoly has been played for 70 days at a stretch. This has been the longest time period during which the game has been played. A property called Marvin Gardens has been misspelled. The correct name would be Marven Gardens.  In 1995, Parker Brothers apologized for this mistake. The place called St. Charles Place does not exist any more now.

The game had become very popular in Cuba. When Fidel Castro came to power, he ordered the destruction of all Monopoly sets. However Monopoly still continues to be played around the world. An interesting Monopoly fact is that the game has been sold about 250 million times around the world. Why this obsession with Monopoly?

Well, for starters, the game deals with money. Money has been an obsession with people for ages. It just seems an easy way to earn a lot of money, however fictional, just by a roll of dice. The pattern is very similar to gambling. The Monopoly facts clearly state that the game has the potential to turn it into an obsession for its players.

One understands why Castro thought the game to be detrimental to human labor and production. But in spite of that, there have been world records for playing this game in a bathtub, on a tree house and upside down. Monopoly continues to rule the charts as the most favorite game of people around the world.
